When crushed, the broad leaves of this slender, herbacious shrub release a tangy, citrus scent. The waxy texture of the leaves provides protection against insects while giving the plant a deep green color. Each leaf is double lobed end to end with each lobe possessing an elliptical shape. The leaves grow at the tips of the stems and fan out to form groups of five or six. The stems and branches of the shrub boast a vibrant red color that deepens to burnt umber at the trunk of the shrub.
